On one of the hottest Saturdays of the year at Barrfields Park Largs steamed ahead in the Scottish Junior Cup with a deserved win against the East of Scotland League leaders.

A goal in each half separated the sides but, in truth, Thistle could have scored four or five by the end.

The home team set the pattern from kick-off by pushing forward on both flanks.

In only the second minute the speedy overlapping Blair Devine sent a cross just over the bar from the left wing.

For the first half hour Thistle pumped long balls towards Devine and lone striker Will Sewell, but there was too much overhitting and Sauchie cleared resolutely.

On the half-hour mark a Devine free kick from the right was met by Davidson but he headed wide, while at the other end Sludden fired a free kick wide of keeper Joe Wilton's goal.

After 40 minutes the lively Jamie Martin was clean through and lobbed the keeper but he was ruled offside.

However a minute later the wee man scored to the top of the net after a great run down the right by David McGrath.

Thistle should have tied up the result within minutes of the second half when Davidson had only the keeper to beat but shot wide. Then Sewell had a fast run and shot past the post.

It was Sewell who created the second goal in the 67th minute when he swivelled to blast a great shot which rebounded from the woodwork for Davidson to dive in and head the ball into the net to make up for missing a sitter.

Sewell could have scored himself minutes later when Martin put him through in the box, only to fire wide of target.

Largs keeper Wilton, who has not conceded a goal at Barrfields this season, made a solitary save before the end.

Substitutes Travis Stracey and Chris McGeown came on for the final 10 minutes and young Stracey had two efforts saved by the keeper.

Overall, it was  a fine team performance with the side anchored by centre backs Cory Hughes and Kieran Brady and Stuart Faulds running the game in midfield.

More cup business at home this weekend as Largs host Bellshill Athletic in the South of Scotland Cup.

Largs: Wilton, McLeod, McMaster, Brady, Hughes, Faulds, Davidson, McGrath, Martin, Sewell, Devine.
