LARGS Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international.
Sitting second top of the league after the win at Glenafton and as I said previously, it’s not an easy place to go. Well done, it’s a case of 'catch us if you can'. The hardest thing though is staying there, keep showing up, putting on the performances and getting the results.
The next three games though are all cup ties for Largs although I do see that the game against East Kilbride is no longer on the fixture list . The teams below are in a similar position regarding cup ties so second spot is Largs' for a few weeks yet .
I stopped off at Somerset Park for the Ayr v Morton game on Saturday. Going into the Somerset I met two old faces . Jimmy Hughes is an ex-Ayr player who also turned out for Kilbirnie. Jimmy liked a tackle and was a really good player.
Jimmy is now doing the stats for Ayr, whatever that is. When I was at Beith we tried to sign Jimmy but no way, coming from Kilbirnie, was he pulling on a Beith strip.
He eventually signed for Kilbirnie which despite winning trophies at senior level probably made his career.
The other old face was ex-Largs committee man Donald Reid. Donald’s son Gareth works with Morton and Donald goes to a lot of the Morton games. I did get the feeling he misses the juniors and he does still help out at Ardrossan.
Donald was instrumental in myself being given the managers job at Largs . I only lasted in the role for around five months as I decided to leave, thought I did ok though and left them in a good place.
Watching the Manchester United game on TV on Sunday had me asking the question of why teams don’t put players on the post when defending corners. The third goal against them would have been avoided with a man on the post, although that would not have saved them from defeat. T
here are big problems at Manchester United right now, and I can see them changing managers now. After six games they have only won two, and that is simply not good for a club of their stature. Makes you wonder why the got rid of Scott McTominay who is tearing it up in Italy for Napoli.
