LARGS Thistle are shaping up for a third round Scottish Junior Cup tie against Caledonian Locomotives at Barrfields Park this weekend after experiencing a cup scare in East Ayrshire.

It is another winner takes all clash with a 2.30pm kick-off, and the match will be decided on penalties if it is a draw after 90 minutes.

Thistle will be looking for a much improved display after they nearly came a cropper on Saturday as second division basement boys Craigmark Burntonians unexpectedly pulled it back from the brink.

The East Ayrshire side made a recovery from two goals down, with Largs shotstopper Joe Wilton once again saving the club from exiting a club competition on penalties.

It could be a valuable lesson for Thistle going forward, and with gaffer Stuart Davidson's marking his tenth anniversary year at the club, the prospect of a long run in a cup tournament is very much something everyone would like to see at the club.

Largs now face Caledonian Locomotives, formerly Rossvale, who put seven past Arbroath Vics in the previous round.

They play in the West of Scotland League Division Two, where they sit in eighth position with four wins, one draw, and four defeats so far.

Recent league results have been a mixed bag including a 2-1 win at Bonnyton and 8-0 reversal at home to Whitletts Vics, and a 2-2 draw at Thistle's next West of Scotland Cup opponents Lanark United.

Largs' home form has been impressive of late with a 3-1 win over Auchinleck Talbot, as well as a 7-1 drubbing of Bellshill Athletic.

This followed a strong showing against East of Scotland Premier side Sauchie in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup with goals from Jamie Martin and Will Sewell securing safe passage.

Speaking in the recent match programme, Largs skipper Stuart Faulds said: "We work on switching play and getting the ball wide, with players arriving in the box.

"We did that really well on Saturday and maybe could have scored even more, but you can't argue with seven goals in any game.

"With Jamie Martin on one wing and Blair Devine on the other, we always have options. Jamie likes to come a bit more central and that can create space for Blair as the defence moves across.

"There aren't many players at our level who would like to go one-on-one with Blair as he is so quick. When you add Laurie McMaster into that mix it becomes very difficult for any defence.

"It is part of my job to move the balls quickly to the flanks and if I can do that then we will have chances."

Largs Thistle AFC recorded their third win on the spin to beat Minishant and enter the quarter finals of the Donsport trophy with a 4-1 victory.

Largs Thistle 2008s lost out at Valspar 3-2 at Queen Margaret Academy in Ayr.
