LARGS Thistle legend George Wall writes for the News about football matters local, national and international.

Just when you think you are going into a game you should win easily you come unstuck, but hey, cup games are about getting through to the next round, so another victory for Largs and the winning streak continues. Will Sewell back on a goal drought though.

In the WoSFL the result of the day for me was Troon beating Beith 4-1. Troon are now on the same points as Largs but three goals behind. I never thought Troon would be up there challenging.

In Europe this week it was shown how far Rangers and Celtic are behind I would say the majority of clubs in Europe. Money and budgets seemed to be mentioned a lot but it was only two years ago Rangers were in a European final and Celtic, from reports, have somewhere between £77 million and £100m in the bank. I just didn’t get Brendan Rodgers comment saying he would not change anything after the 7-1 defeat.

Surely after watching your team get heavily beaten, with hindsight, you would have changed something. The objective surely is to win games regardless how you do it, 1-0 to the Arsenal springs to mind.

The Scotland squad has been announced with a few new faces but will that change anything?

Two really hard games coming up against Croatia and Portugal.

The under-21s squad was also announced for their games against Belgium and Kazakhstan.

What struck me though was within the 21s squad there are 10 graduates from the Scottish FA Performance School, however, in the first team squad there is one, Billy Gilmour.

So where has it all gone wrong? How good are these performance schools? How good are the coaches within them? The schools have been up and running for a number of years but are we seeing any benefit from them?

Nicky Devlin has been announced in the Scotland first team squad which I think is a fantastic story, he really has served his time given he is 30 years of age, having started out at Dumbarton, Stenhousemuir, Ayr United, Walsall, Livingston and now Aberdeen. A great story.

Recognition has to be given for the terrific start Aberdeen have made to the season. For the new manager Jimmy Thelin to have won every game so far is an incredible launch to his Dons career.

Next up is Celtic at Parkhead in a mouth-watering first versus second clash on October 19 which is surprisingly not going to be a match pick for live TV coverage.
