It was an ace night at Largs Golf Club as the annual prizegiving dinner took place featuring a first time champion in Gavin Chesney, writes Drew Cochrane.

What a year it has been for the Kilbirnie man who not only won the Kelburn title on the last green of the 36 hole spectacular final but he was also Ayrshire Stroke Play winner, Viking Krus winner and champion at Kilbirnie Place club.

Gavin was also in the top 10 finishers throughout the county competitions.

Largs past captain Martin Phillips, who refereed the final, said that it was the best 36 holes of golf he had ever seen with terrific sportsmanship between Gavin and runner-up Fraser Innes who had led all the way to the last green when he was pipped at the post.

In receiving the grand trophy Gavin told the members that he had "rode his luck" to win it against Fraser who had been a gentleman in defeat.

Another man honoured was former champion Brian Fisher, who won the Ayrshire Seniors Stroke Play title for the second year in a row, and played for the county team.

Chairman for the evening, Drew Cochrane, congratulated the club on helping outgoing captain Martin to raise almost £4,000 for the Maggie's Centre for cancer care. It included sponsoring Martin on a skydive.

Long-serving greenkeeper Ian Barr presented awards to his team of Marshall Sloss, Alan Madden, David Seddon, Chris Palmer and George Morrison.
