In this week's delve into the archives, we head back to the pivotal year of 1963.

It was a seismic year in world history with the assassination of American president John F Kennedy in November, while in TV, the iconic show Doctor Who was first broadcast.

The Beatles were emerging as a world class music act and had number one singles with 'From Me to You', 'She Loves You', and 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'.

A rare picture from 61 years ago, above, shows the Largs and Millport Curlers at the Hill Pond, Millport.

And Aubery Pond was opened and became a popular attraction for decades, and it still very much in use thanks to Largs Model Boat Club.

It was Bailie PM White who first suggested the project and there was a certain amount of opposition both inside and outside the council.

Only the intervention of influential political heavyweights, including Provost Herbert Acheson and Bailie White of Largs Town Council who were both strong supporters of the project, managed to push it through.

Largs and Millport Weekly News: And Largs was not alone in having a popular outdoor water feature as The Garrison in Millport had a very well used paddling pool which is well remembered
